What this is

The Vigil stages a conversation with a documented historical figure at a fixed hour of their life. You speak a name; the archive builds a dossier from the record, or refuses when the record is too thin to carry a voice honestly.

Every voice here is an AI rendering of the documented record

That sentence is the whole disclosure, and it is literal. No figure in this product is a recording, a transcript or a reconstruction of a real person speaking. Each is a large language model working inside a dossier the archive built: an era-lock (what they may know), a knowledge horizon (what they cannot know), a graded record and a source list.

Inside a conversation, individual passages carry a grade. The room shows grades as light on the phrase itself rather than as labels:

• Steady gold — the words survive in a document, and the sources name it.
• Moon-silver — someone else wrote it down afterward, and said so.
• Ember, flickering — recalled without a checked source; unproven until there is one.
• No glow — no mark, and therefore no grade at all. Most of what a figure says is rendered speech in a documented register, not quotation.

Letters carry the same distinction as a numbered key and a colophon, on the screen, in the exported image and on the printed page. A screenshot cannot lose the disclosure.

The archive will not embody a living person, and it will not invent someone whose record cannot support a voice. Both refusals are free.

What it costs

Free, every night: three new dossiers, twelve exchanges, and your letters kept on your own device. The named shelf, the three doorways and every refusal cost nothing, tonight and every night — those are served from code and never touch a paid model.

Patronage opens forty new dossiers a day, four hundred exchanges, the designed period voices, and letters sealed and addressed to you. The honest reason there is a limit at all: the room runs on a machine that is paid by the word.

Your data

There is no account. Your name, your kept letters and what the room remembers of your last visit are stored in your own browser and never posted anywhere. Clearing site data clears all of it, permanently, including your letters — save the ones you want as images. Patronage is a signed cookie tied to a Stripe payment, restorable from the receipt above.

This is a rendering, not a historical authority. Nothing here is advice — legal, medical, financial or otherwise — and the figures are not the people. Quoted passages are graded so you can check them; anything ungraded is not a quotation. Patronage is a one-time payment for continued access on this device; if the room goes dark, unused patronage is refunded on request.

Corrections to the record are the most useful mail this project can receive. If a dossier states something the sources do not support, say so and it will be fixed or pulled.
